Description

Break Symbol Links is a powerful script for Adobe Illustrator that gives you precise control over breaking symbol links in your documents. Instead of manually breaking each symbol instance one by one, this script provides an intuitive interface to select which symbols to break and where to break them.

Installation

1. Download the Break Symbol Links.jsx script file.

2. Place the script in your Adobe Illustrator Scripts folder:

⮑ Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator <Version>\Presets\<Language>\Scripts

3. Restart Adobe Illustrator if it's already running.

4. Alternatively, just drag and drop the Break Symbol Links.jsx file onto your Illustrator document window.

Using the Script

Open Your Document

Launch Adobe Illustrator and open a document that contains symbols
If no document is open, the script will prompt you to open one

Run the Script

Go to File > Scripts > Break Symbol Links
Or navigate to File > Scripts > Other Script... and select the script file
Script dialog will appear with multiple options:

➊ Choose Your Search Scope

Select where you want to search for symbols:

Entire document - Finds all symbols in the document
Selected objects only - Only processes symbols within your current selection (requires objects to be selected)
Active layer only - Limits the search to the currently active layer
Active artboard only - Only finds symbols on the active artboard

Note: If you have objects selected when running the script, it will default to "Selected objects only".

➋ Select Symbols to Break

The main panel shows all symbols found within your chosen scope:

2.1 Search Bar:

Search Bar: Type to filter symbols by name (useful for large documents)
Clear Button (✖): Clears the search filter

2.2 Symbol List

Symbol List: Displays symbol names and the number of instances
All symbols are selected by default
Click individual symbols to select or deselect them.
Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) to select multiple symbols.

2.3 Refine Your Selection (Optional)

Use the selection buttons to adjust which symbols will be processed:

Select All: Selects all symbols in the list
Deselect All: Clears all selections
Invert Selection: Toggles the selection state (selected becomes unselected and vice versa)

Click the OK button to proceed with breaking the selected symbol links
A progress window will appear showing the operation status
Click Cancel if you want to abort without making changes

Review the Results

After completion, a confirmation message shows how many symbol instances were processed
The view automatically adjusts to fit the processed artwork
Your symbol instances are now converted to regular editable groups

Licensor is not obligated to provide updates, support, or maintenance for the Software. However, updates may be provided at the sole discretion of the Licensor.

9. Governing Law
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

10. Entire Agreement
This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between you and the Licensor concerning the Software and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings regarding such subject matter.
