Installation

1. Download the Unit Converter.jsx script file.

2. Place the script in your Adobe Illustrator Scripts folder:

⮑ Mac: /Applications/Adobe Illustrator <Version>/Presets/<Language>/Scripts

⮑ Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator <Version>\Presets\<Language>\Scripts

3. Restart Adobe Illustrator if it's already running

4. Access the script via File > Scripts > Unit Converter

5. Alternatively, run it directly via File > Scripts > Other Script... and browse to the file location


Tip: You can also drag and drop the .jsx file directly onto the Illustrator workspace to run the script instantly – no installation needed.

Using the Script

🅰 Basic Usage: Manual Conversion

1. Launch the Script

  • Go to File > Scripts > Unit Converter
  • The Unit Calculator dialog will appear

2. Enter a Value

  • Click on any input field (or click its label to focus)
  • Type a numeric value
  • All other unit fields will automatically update with converted values

3. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

While focused on any input field:

  • Press Up Arrow to increase the value by 1
  • Press Down Arrow to decrease the value by 1
  • Hold Shift + Up/Down Arrow for increments of 5

4. Default Behavior

  • When opened, the calculator defaults to "1" in your document's current ruler unit
  • If no document is open, it defaults to 1 point (pt)

🅱 Advanced Usage: Converting Object Dimensions

When you have objects selected in your document, you can use their actual dimensions as the conversion base:

1. Select Object(s)

  • Select one or more objects in your Illustrator document
  • Run the script

2. Enable "Use Selected Object Value"

  • In the Options panel, check the "Use Selected Object Value" checkbox
  • The Width/Height radio buttons and Next Object navigation will become enabled

3. Choose Dimension

  • Select Width to convert the object's width
  • Select Height to convert the object's height
  • All unit fields will update to show the selected dimension in different units

4. Navigate Multiple Objects (if multiple objects are selected)

  • Click the ← (Previous) button to view the previous object's dimensions
  • Click the → (Next) button to view the next object's dimensions
  • The navigation cycles through all selected objects
  • Switch between Width/Height at any time to see different dimensions

5. Return to Manual Mode

  • Uncheck "Use Selected Object Value" to return to manual entry mode
  • The calculator will reset to 1 unit in your document's ruler unit

Understanding the Interface

The Unit Calculator dialog is organized into several sections:

Main Conversion Area

  • Left Column: Unit labels (Pixels, Points, Picas, etc.)
  • Center Column: Input fields for entering/viewing values
  • Right Column: Unit symbols (px, pt, pc, etc.)

Options Panel

  • Use Selected Object Value: Toggle to use dimensions from selected objects
  • Width/Height: Choose which dimension to convert
  • Next Object: Navigation controls for multiple selections (← and → buttons)

Active Field Indicator

  • The input field matching your document's ruler unit will be automatically focused when the dialog opens
  • This makes it quick to start entering values in your preferred unit

    4. Ownership

    5. Disclaimer of Warranties

    THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NONINFRINGEMENT.     This Agreement is effective until terminated. Licensor may terminate this Agreement immediately if you breach any term of this Agreement. Upon termination, you must cease all use of the Software and destroy any copies in your possession.

    8. Updates and Support

    Licensor is not obligated to provide updates, support, or maintenance for the Software. However, updates may be provided at the sole discretion of the Licensor.

    9. Governing Law

    This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

    10. Entire Agreement

    This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between you and the Licensor concerning the Software and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings regarding such subject matter.

    By using the Software, you acknowledge that you have read this Agreement, understand it, and agree to be bound by its terms.
