Script for Adobe Illustrator

✦ Available exclusively on Patreon for Pro supporters.

Description

Symbol Transfer is an Adobe Illustrator script that streamlines the process of copying symbols between multiple open documents. Instead of manually copying and pasting symbols one at a time, this script provides an intuitive interface to select symbols from a source document and transfer them to one or multiple target documents simultaneously.

The script is particularly useful for:

  • Maintaining consistent symbol libraries across multiple projects
  • Sharing design elements between team members
  • Consolidating symbols from different documents
  • Batch transferring symbols to multiple files at once

Features

  • Multi-document support: Transfer symbols to multiple target documents in a single operation
  • Batch symbol selection: Select multiple symbols at once using checkboxes
  • Smart search & filter: Quickly find symbols by name with real-time filtering
  • Selection tools: Select All, Deselect All, and Invert Selection buttons for efficient workflow
  • Duplicate handling: Prompts you before overwriting existing symbols with the same name
  • Clean transfer: Symbols are transferred without leaving unwanted instances on the canvas
  • Progress feedback: Displays detailed results showing transferred and skipped symbols
  • Safety warnings: Alerts you when attempting large batch operations (>100 symbol transfers)

Tips & Best Practices

  1. Organize before transferring: Rename symbols in the source document before transferring for better organization
  2. Use search for large libraries: If you have many symbols, use the search feature to quickly find what you need
  3. Test with one document first: When transferring to multiple documents, test with one target first to ensure the symbols transfer correctly
  4. Save your work: Save all documents before running the script, especially when overwriting existing symbols
  5. Check symbol dependencies: Ensure any nested symbols or linked assets are also transferred if needed

Troubleshooting

Alert Message: "You need at least 2 open documents to transfer symbols"
Solution: Open at least two Illustrator documents before running the script

Alert Message: "No symbols found in source document"
Solution: The selected source document doesn't contain any symbols. Create symbols first or select a different source document

Alert Message: "No symbols selected for transfer"
Solution: Select at least one symbol from the list before clicking OK

Problem: Symbols not appearing in target document
Solution: Check the Symbols panel in the target document. The symbols are added to the library but no instances are placed on the canvas

Problem: Script runs slowly with many symbols
Solution: This is normal for large batches. The warning dialog alerts you when processing >100 transfers. Consider breaking the operation into smaller batches

☻ Conclusion

With Symbol Transfer, managing your symbol libraries across multiple documents becomes a seamless part of your design process. This tool is designed to maintain consistency and speed up your workflow, allowing you to focus more on creating and less on manual asset management.
