Quick Rename

Script for Adobe Illustrator

Description

Quick Rename is a powerful Adobe Illustrator script that streamlines the process of renaming selected objects in your document. Instead of manually accessing the Layers panel to rename each item, this script provides a convenient floating palette that stays open while you work, allowing you to quickly rename any selected object or multiple objects simultaneously with just a few keystrokes.

Features

  • Floating Palette Interface: A resizable, always-accessible window that remains open during your design workflow, eliminating the need to repeatedly open dialogs.
  • Batch Renaming: Rename multiple selected objects at once with a single name, instantly applying it to all selected items.
  • Smart Selection Detection: Automatically detects various object types including text objects, text ranges, and insertion points, intelligently targeting the correct item to rename.
  • Real-Time Clear Button: A convenient clear button that becomes active when text is entered, allowing you to quickly reset the name input field.
  • Persistent Settings: Automatically saves your last entered name between sessions, so you can quickly reuse common naming patterns.
  • Detailed Rename Confirmation: After renaming, displays a comprehensive summary showing the before and after names of all renamed items, providing clear feedback on what changed.

2. Place the script in your Adobe Illustrator Scripts folder:

➊ Select Objects to Rename

Before renaming, you need to select the object or objects you want to rename:

  • Click to select a single object on your artboard
  • Hold Shift and click multiple objects to select them all at once
  • Use selection tools like the Selection Tool (V) or Direct Selection Tool (A)
  • Select text objects, shapes, groups, or any other layer items

The Quick Rename palette works with whatever you have currently selected in your document.

➋ Enter the New Name

Once your objects are selected, use the Quick Rename palette to set a new name:

  • Click inside the name input field in the center of the palette
  • Type the new name you want to assign to your selected object(s)
  • The input field will expand if you need more space for longer names by dragging the right edge
  • The Rename button will become active once you start typing

If you need to clear the input field quickly, click the  button on the left side of the input field.

➌ Apply the Rename

After entering your desired name, apply it to your selection:

  • Click the Rename button on the right side of the palette
  • Alternatively, press Enter on your keyboard while the input field is active

The script will immediately rename all selected objects with the name you entered. If you selected multiple objects, they will all receive the same name.

➍ Review the Results

After renaming, a confirmation dialog will appear showing you the changes:

  • The dialog displays how many items were renamed
  • Each renamed item is listed with its old name and new name in a before → after format
  • Click OK to close the confirmation dialog

The Quick Rename palette remains open and ready for your next renaming operation. Your last entered name is automatically saved, so you can quickly reuse it if needed.

The Quick Rename palette is designed for continuous use during your workflow:

  • The palette remains open and accessible, so you can rename objects without reopening dialogs
  • Resize the palette horizontally by dragging its edges to accommodate longer names
  • The palette remembers your last entered name, even after closing and reopening Illustrator
  • Press Escape to close the palette when you're finished renaming

☻ Wrap-Up
